The tables provide a snapshot of the Welsh economy and detail the buying and selling relationships of goods and services between all parts of it for 2019.
This is the latest release
The Welsh Government has produced a set of Supply and Use Tables (SUTs) and Input-Output Tables (IOTs) for 2019. These tables give a snapshot of the Welsh economy and detail the buying and selling relationships of goods and services between all parts of it. Similar tables are also published by the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA), as well as by the ONS for the UK as a whole.
This publication is the result of a 3-year project to better understand the Welsh economy. Professor Calvin Jones joined the Welsh Government on secondment to develop this work, and we are grateful to him for his valuable expertise.
This page contains links to the SUTs and IOTs in excel format, a methodology document which explains our methods and a blog from Calvin Jones which details the production process and implications for the Welsh data landscape (Digital and Data blog). A tool enabling users to conduct analysis with their own IOTs will also be published later in Spring 2025.
Official Statistics in Development
These statistics have been published as ‘Official Statistics in Development’, in line with the Code of Practice for Statistics (UK Statistics Authority). Official statistics in development are official statistics that are undergoing a development; they may be new or existing statistics, and will be tested with users, in line with the standards of trustworthiness, quality, and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics. Our Statement of Compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics can be found at the end of the accompanying Methodology document.
The SUTs and IOTs are newly published statistics which will be tested with users. The accompanying methodology document outlines the limitations in terms of data availability and quality. Our methods have been peer reviewed by colleagues across the UK and the insights from this process will be used to inform the future development of Welsh IOTs.
During the next year, we plan further developmental work on IOTs:
- User engagement – We will seek feedback from stakeholders on the publication of these tables, and work with them to understand how they are using the tables within their work. Our March 2025 Economic Statistics User group will focus on IOTs and related work. User feedback will feed into the future program of work.
- Methodological developments – we will act upon feedback from the peer review process to implement changes to future IOTs where feasible.
- Data quality - we will develop a plan for improving the availability and quality of data feeding into the IOTs. This will include working alongside ONS, devolved governments and other stakeholders and data providers.
