A table showing the rate of exclusions per 1,000 pupils in Wales from 2014/15 to 2016/17. In 2016/17 there were 34.4 fixed term exclusions of 5 days or less, 1.9 fixed term exclusions of over 5 days, and 0.4 permanent exclusions per 1,000 pupils. The rates in 2016/17 are all higher than in the previous two years.

  • In 2016/17 there were 0.4 permanent exclusions, 34.4 fixed-term exclusions of 5 days or fewer and 1.9 fixed-term exclusions over 5 days per 1,000 pupils in maintained schools and pupil referral units.
  • The rate of permanent exclusions has increased for the first time since 2011/12. The rates of fixed-term exclusions increased in 2016/17.
