Data on medical, dental, nursing and midwifery staff, as at 31 March 2021.
This is not the latest release in the series: Staff directly employed by the NHS
Most of the staff groups at 31 March 2021 included staff on short-term or fixed contracts brought in to help during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Given the timing, any impact on staffing numbers in response to COVID-19 would not likely be great at 31 March 2020.
Between 31 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 (in terms of full-time equivalent numbers)
- The total number of staff increased by 5,854 (7.1%) to 88,259.
- Medical and dental staff increased by 492 (7.2%) to 7,294.
- Nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff increased by 2,388 (7.1%) to 36,027.
- Other staff groups increased by 2,974 (7.1%) to 44,938.
- Staff headcount increased by 6,853 (6.9%) to 102,681.

Data has been published on StatsWales. There is no statistical release.
This data has some seasonal patterns. Medical and dental and nursing staff numbers tend to decline in the period up until August and then increase from September as graduates start. As such, comparisons are made with the same quarter from the previous year.
