Peter Stanley
Environment champion award 2025 winner
Peter has contributed to environmental programmes and studies at a local, national and international scale. Transformational change has been achieved in tackling the legacy of metal mine pollution from 1,300 mines along 700km of waterways. He actively encouraged collaboration and knowledge exchange at all levels showcasing the world leading innovation in Wales to colleagues in New Zealand, Russia, Sweden and chairing international conferences in Wales.
Peter has transformed our methods of dealing with abandoned metal mines. Prior to Pete’s involvement, there was no single approach in place to look at the scale of the problem and how to address it. Pete created and led a dedicated programme within Natural Resources Wales. As the programme lead, he regularly liaised and challenged partners, internal teams, other stakeholders ensuring the programme was delivered and securing ongoing funding.
Peter later acted as Natural resources Wales’s Technical Authority managing the metal mine portfolio and intervention measures implemented across Wales that are helping achieve reduced pollution, better Water Framework Directive status change and restoring river health.
One area he dramatically improved is understanding that the metal mines in Upland Wales are important for our landscape, heritage and specialised metal tolerant Calaminarian grassland habitats.
Peter has worked diligently with all those concerned with other important designations as well as river health.
He is highly regarded by his peers and is recognised internationally.
