Patrick Watts

Patrick Watts works as a consultant paediatric ophthalmologist at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. He found a home in Wales, having migrated from India as a postgraduate qualified doctor. He trained In Yorkshire, Windsor, Wales, London and Canada before taking up a consultant position in Wales. For 5 years he served as training programme director for ophthalmic training in Wales and was responsible for training singlehandedly a third of consultant ophthalmologists currently working in Wales, as well as others who have moved to work elsewhere. He spearheaded the new simulation suite at Cardiff for ophthalmic training.
He is dedicated to the profession and has been a tireless writer of Royal College of Ophthalmologists guidelines and teaching documents in his own time. One area of research he has led is around non-accidental eye injury and how doctors can look out for signs of abuse in babies.
His guidelines and studies in this area of research have led the way in the UK. He has travelled all over the world as a visiting professor that has gained him an international reputation which has helped put Wales on the international map through his research. Through his work, he has saved the sight of countless babies and children and is considered the most senior paediatric ophthalmologist in Wales for over a decade.
