Nominated for Public services award

Dr Gareth Evans is Head of Mathematics at Ysgol y Creuddyn, Llandudno. Dr Evans has actively worked to make mathematics accessible in Welsh and English to learners, with his motto ‘Everyone Counts’.

After identifying a shortage of Welsh-medium maths resources, Dr Evans created www.mathemateg.com, a bilingual website providing high-quality educational support that benefits learners throughout Wales, not just the pupils in his school. His YouTube and TikTok videos have been watched over 1.5 million times, providing support for pupils aged 11-18.

He has been described as a pioneer in his profession; an outstanding maths teacher who is not only passionate about his subject but strives to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunity for all pupils, regardless of their background. He influences the education of young people in a transformative way whether at school, local, regional or national level, and he is always looking for new ideas to stimulate pupils' interest and inspire all abilities to succeed. He sees himself as a learner first and then as a teacher and always goes the extra step for his pupils, no matter their ability.

In 2024 he was recognised for his work by being named Secondary School Teacher of the Year in the Welsh Professional Teaching Awards and winning a silver award at the UK National Pearson Teaching Awards.
