Dr Ami Jones and Glenn Dene
Nominated for Culture award
Dr Ami Jones MBE and Glenn Dene are both frontline workers for Aneurin Bevan University Health board. Ami is an Intensive Care Consultant and Glenn is an Operating Department Practitioner and is also a skilled photographer and author.
During the pandemic, as well as fulfilling their usual duties, they also published a collection of Glenn’s photographs from inside Welsh hospitals in a photo book entitled ‘Behind the Mask: the NHS Family and the fight with Covid 19’.
Glenn’s photos are accompanied by Ami’s narrative and quotes from other hospital staff. This work highlighted to the world what life was like at the forefront of the Covid-19 pandemic and helped to illuminate the reality of the situation for NHS staff and patients which was not always visible to the public.
It is a valuable record of the NHS experience of the pandemic and quickly became the #1 photojournalism book in the UK. All profits from the book are being donated to NHS charities including the Wales Air Ambulance.
Ami and Glenn have now produced a follow up book called ‘The Second Wave’ which tells the story of the second wave of COVID19 and the move of staff and patients to the newly opened Grange University Hospital.
