Andrew Thomas
Nominated for Volunteering award
Andrew Thomas founded Prostate Cymru charity with a patient, the late Ray Murray 21 years ago while working as a Consultant Urologist in the NHS. The charity has grown to offer national support and expertise, addressing a significant need and ensuring men in Wales could have access to the best available treatments for prostate diseases.
He has led several campaigns to raise the level of awareness of prostate cancer in Welsh men including; ‘What’s your PSA?’, ‘The best defence is to know the facts’, ‘Save the Males in Wales’ and currently ‘We can beat the odds” – highlighting the enhanced risk of prostate cancer in black men and those with a family history.
To ensure the awareness message gets to all parts of Wales, including rural and deprived areas, Andrew has led the development of the only Charity funded ‘Man Van ‘in the UK.
Andrew is an active fundraiser and has supported the charity by leading a number of challenges including; Climbing five Volcanoes in Ecuador (2013) and trekking the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu (2023). He also has participated in multiple cycle challenges that have included Pembroke to Paris, Nice to Rome and Barcelona to Monaco. In 2025, he will lead a 24 hour golf challenge and trek the Namib Desert to raise funds for prostate Cymru.
His leadership and perseverance have established Prostate Cymru as a respected and impactful organisation.
Andrew's tireless and unrecognized efforts have clearly helped to save thousands of men's lives.
