Former Vice Chancellor of Swansea University.
Robin Williams was a council member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and long-time Chair of its Research, Innovation and Engagement Committee, until 2018. Before his Vice-Chancellorship at Swansea (1994-2003), Robin was Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University. His research interests have been in semiconductor physics, advanced electronic devices, and nanotechnology.
He has served on ministerial advisory groups for economic development and education in Wales. He is highly instrumental in the establishment of the Welsh-medium education Coleg Federal (now the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol). He was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2019 for services to higher education, research and the Welsh language.
A member of the first Science Advisory Council for Wales (SACW) and an occasional acting Chair (2010-15) he was appointed Chair of the Second SACW 2015-18. He remains a member of the Innovation Advisory Council of Wales. He is a Founding Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and served on its Council for some years.
