Placing a statutory obligation on local authorities to assess and ensure that sufficient childcare is available to support families in their area is widely considered to be essential in ensuring that childcare is given the policy and funding priority it needs on a local and national level.
However, the findings of this research point to an almost unanimous agreement that the current childcare sufficiency assessment (CSA) documents, produced every five years, are not fit for purpose and that the time, effort and resources required to produce them does not constitute good value for money.
