Professor Peter Halligan

Advises the Welsh Government on scientific issues across departments.

The Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales (CSAW):

  • promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects
  • leads on science within the Welsh Government
  • reviews scientific advice given to the Welsh Government
  • works with the Chief Scientific Adviser and Departmental Chief Scientific Advisers in the UK Government
  • is the Head of Profession for science and technology staff in Wales and the Welsh Government

Professor Halligan is a distinguished psychologist and neuroscientist. He has helped establish important developments including:

  • Cardiff University Brian Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC)
  • Wales Research and Diagnostic Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Centre (PETIC)
  • Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (WICN)
  • Haydn Ellis Distinguished Lecture Series
  • Cardiff University Research Institutes

He was also the Chief Executive of the Learned Society of Wales after leaving Cardiff University.

Professor Halligan is the third CSAW, his predecessors are:

  • Professor Julie Williams (from September 2013 to September 2017), a leading Alzheimer's researcher
  • Professor John Harries (from May 2010 to April 2013), a distinguished atmospheric physicist
