Porcine epidemic diarrhoea is a viral disease which affects pigs.
There is no risk to human health.
Suspicion and confirmation
Contact your vet as soon as possible, if you suspect porcine epidemic diarrhoea.
Cinical signs
The following clinical signs may be present:
- rapidly spreading watery diarrhoea
- reduced appetite
- dehydration
- lethargy
- vomiting
The disease has a high mortality rate. Piglets on outdoor or straw based units can be found dead before the symptoms are identified.
Transmission and prevention
Porcine epidemic diarrhoea is highly infectious. It spreads through contact with:
- infected pigs
- anything with their faeces on it, including bedding, vehicles, clothing or feed
You can help to prevent the disease by practicing strict biosecurity.
