The review examined the range of smoking cessation services provided in Wales and approaches for future provision.
This is the latest release
The review suggests:
- there is evidence for the most effective interventions, notably face-to-face support with pharmacotherapy, supported use of pharmacotherapy and telephone support
- evidence is available to inform interventions targeting groups of smokers, including those in deprived households/communities, pregnant women and with poor mental health
- cessation activities can successfully be used in a range of settings, including community pharmacy, primary care, secondary care and the workplace
- smoking needs to be tackled in isolation, with effectiveness diluted when addressed as part of a multiple risk behaviour intervention
- there is some evidence system change can be beneficial, such as electronic health record systems to document smoking status and referral to specialist services
- various techniques can assist with recruitment, with third sector organisations potentially having a valuable role to play.
