Data on the number of patients admitted to mental health facilities both formally and informally, and patients subject to supervised community treatment for April 2016 to March 2017.

Admissions

  • In 2016-17, there were 8,723 admissions (excluding place of safety detentions) to mental health facilities in Wales, a decrease of 574 (6%) from 2015-16.
  • 97% of admissions (excluding place of safety detentions) in 2016-17 were to NHS facilities in Wales, with the remainder admitted to independent hospitals.

Formal admissions under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation

  • 1,776 admissions in 2016-17 were under the Mental Health Act 1983 (excluding place of safety detentions) and other legislation, an increase of 44 (3%) from 2015-16.
  • 94% (1,663 of 1,776) of formal admissions (excluding place of safety detentions) were detained without the involvement of criminal courts (Part II); with 75% (1,246 out of 1,663) of these being admitted for assessment, with or without treatment (Section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983).
  • Section 2 showed the largest increase (in terms of numbers) between 2015-16 and 2016-17 rising from 1,211 to 1,246 (35% or 3%).

Supervised community treatment

  • In 2016-17, there were 206 patients subject to supervised community treatment (SCT), including 17 for whom an independent hospital was responsible. Of this total, 117 were male and 89 were female.
  • Of those patients subject to SCT, there were 128 recalls to hospital, 89 revocations and 132 discharges in 2016-17.
