Following my Written Statement to Members of 11 October and my response to the Urgent Question last week, I am writing to provide a further update on recent events regarding the Unity Group of companies.
On the 9th October the Unity Group of companies who own Unity Mine reluctantly filed a notice of Intention to appoint an Administrator.
Members will wish to note that the mine’s Management Board have today applied to the court for an extension to that notification period.
Unity Mine based is one of Wales' largest drift mine, producing high quality coal and employing over 200 people at its mine at Cwmgwrach near Neath. While we have been working with company to offer assistance, in compliance within state-aid rules, there are wider financial pressures and challenges that have meant that the company has had to take this decision.
The extension provides a further period for the Mine’s Management Board to be able to seek agreement on a future investment proposal with interested parties.
This move is unsettling for the company’s employees and their families, as a Government, we are determined to do all that we can to support the employer and its workforce at this difficult time. We remain in contact with the company and continue to work with the company and third parties to explore all options for securing the future of the mining at Cwmgrwach.
