Earlier this year I invited local authorities to submit proposals for improving transport infrastructure and services which I could consider for funding support through the Local Transport Fund.
I indicated to local authorities their proposals should support jobs and economic growth, reduce economic inactivity and encourage healthier and sustainable travel. There was also a requirement for their schemes to improve the quality of life particularly those living in disadvantaged communities.
I have been encouraged with the response from all the local authorities and with the proposals put forward.
A total of 96 applications for funding were received totalling £34.5 million in value. The applications covered a range of transport schemes with 25 related to road improvements, 30 to public transport and 41 to walking and cycling.
I have been able to fund 41 schemes through the Local Transport Fund either in full or by partial funding. One of these will also be supported by me through the budget allocated for the Metro project in South East Wales together with a further four schemes. I am attaching to this Statement the schemes that will receive funding and the amount of grant to be allocated.
The City Region Boards have endorsed the schemes in their area that will receive funding.
In addition to allocating £15.4 million I have provided the 22 local authorities with £0.3 million to enable them to meet their existing network mapping duties under the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013.
This financial support to local authorities will help them deliver transport improvements in their area that serve the needs of businesses, people and communities.
