This statement is being issued during recess in order to keep members informed. Should members wish me to make a further statement or to answer questions on this when the Assembly returns I would be happy to do so.

Today, the report commissioned by the Swansea Bay City Region Board, ‘A Growth Strategy for the Swansea Bay City Region’, will be published.

The report sets out a bold vision for the City Region and identifies the clear need for a vibrant city at its heart.

The report acknowledges the huge potential of the Swansea Bay City Region and proposes some foundations for a more prosperous future, including:

  • Better use of existing assets;
  • Attraction of new investment, people and activity to the region;
  • Consideration of key projects that will enable transformational change.

The report also proposes a number of ‘signature projects’ that would allow the city to project a bold vision for the future and promote its extensive assets within and beyond the region.

I would like to commend the Swansea Bay City Region Board for this work, and I have written to the Chair to express my broad support for the direction being taken.

Clearly, further work and discussion is needed, particularly where significant investment is proposed. This step is recognised within the report, and I have asked the Swansea Bay City Region Board, led by Sir Terry Matthews, to drive discussions forward within the region.

I will continue to keep Members updated on progress.  A copy of the Report can be found at:
