In 'Qualified for life' I set out 4 strategic objectives for education reform:
- An excellent professional workforce with strong pedagogy-based on an understanding of what works.
- A curriculum which is engaging and attractive to children and young people and which develops within them an independent ability to apply knowledge and skills.
- The qualifications young people achieve are nationally and internationally respected and act as a credible passport to their future learning and employment.
- Leaders of education at every level working together in a self-improving system, providing mutual support and challenge to raise standards in all schools.
As I set out in A Curriculum for Wales – a curriculum for life, Graham Donaldson’s review of curriculum and assessment arrangements in Wales, Successful Futures, together with the review of Initial Teacher Education and Training, Teaching Tomorrow’s Teachers, and the commitment to the ‘New Deal’ for the education workforce, provide the foundations on which to build a world-class education system.
I am pleased to announce that, as part of the over-aching governance of the reform programme, I have brought together a group of key stakeholders to help ensure that our implementation of these reforms is effective and well communicated. The Curriculum for Wales Strategic Stakeholder Group will provide challenge, support and advice as we work together to develop the new curriculum. This group will meet 3 times a year, chaired by Steve Davies, Group Director of the Welsh Government’s School Standards & Workforce Group. The organisations listed below have been invited to join this group and asked to nominate one representative to attend.
The Curriculum for Wales Strategic Stakeholder Group held its first meeting yesterday and a useful and productive discussion took place. A note of this meeting will be published on the Welsh Government’s website in due course. As the Curriculum for Wales programme progresses, we will look to hold a number of additional focused stakeholder events and will continue to engage with and involve stakeholders as our curriculum develops.
