Jayne Bryant MS, Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government
Today, I am pleased to announce my intention to extend Help to Buy Wales for a further 18 months, until September 2026.
Since its launch in January 2014, Help to Buy Wales has supported more than 14,000 households to purchase a home. The scheme enables households who cannot otherwise afford to buy a home to achieve home ownership.
Despite the previous UK Government ending Help to Buy in England in March 2023, in Wales, we have continued this support for prospective homeowners and the housebuilding industry. The current scheme is due to close to applications at the end of March 2025.
Help to Buy Wales will continue unchanged for 18 months. During this extension, my officials will work with stakeholders to consider the recommendations of research about Homebuyers’ needs and the place of Help to Buy Wales published this year.
In announcing the extension today, I want to provide assurance to people hoping to buy a home that the scheme will continue. I also want to provide certainty to the 50 developers and SMEs registered with Help to Buy Wales.
We will continue to work to deliver the scheme with our partners at UK Finance, the Home Builders Federation, the Federation of Master Builders and the Development Bank of Wales.
This statement is being issued during recess to keep Members informed. Should Members wish me to make a further statement or to answer questions on this when the Senedd returns I would be happy to do so.
