Today I am allocating a total of over £31.4 million in transport grants to local authorities across Wales for schemes to improve safety, create economic growth and promote active travel. Local authorities were invited in December and January to submit applications for their priority schemes. A total of 159 applications were received for all the grants.
The Local Transport Fund of £20 million will allow 47 schemes across 20 local authorities to commence schemes or continue work on multi year projects.
The importance of this grant to deliver transport improvements is understood and will be a consideration when deciding how the grant will be managed beyond March 2018. It is not intended that this grant will cease after the next financial year however we do intend to review how it will be allocated in future years.
Nearly £4 million in Road Safety Capital Grant will fund 31 schemes contributing to road casualty reduction in 16 local authorities.
The £5.5 million Safe Routes in Communities Grant is focused on 32 schemes that improve walking and cycling routes to schools in 19 local authorities.
In addition, funding of nearly £2 million will be made available to all local authorities for road safety education and training programmes for, in particular, high risk and vulnerable groups, such as children, young people, older drivers and motorcyclists.
The grants are a substantial investment to support local economic growth, improve road safety and provide more and better routes that enable people in Wales to walk and cycle and to do so safely.
