Earlier this week I received a report from the Steering Group setting out a roadmap towards success, resilience and sustainability for the heritage of Wales.

I established the group in September to review and develop options to improve the future sustainability of the heritage sector in Wales. The Steering Group was Chaired by Justin Albert the National Trust’s Director for Wales. Senior representatives from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, the National Library of Wales, Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, as well as senior trade union representatives, sat on this steering group.

I would like to thank Justin Albert for his work as the Chair of the group, and to each of the institutions and the trade unions for working so constructively together on the report.  I am delighted that the recommendations in the report have the agreement and consensus of all the organisations involved.

I shall consider the recommendations in the report in detail and I will respond to each in due course.

Last year I also received a letter from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales setting out the challenges facing the organisation. In response to this I have asked Dr Simon Thurley to carry out a review of the strategy and operations of Amgueddfa Cymru on my behalf.  This will take into account the broader context including the work of the Steering Group tasked with considering the future of the wider heritage sector in Wales.
