General practice workforce: as at 31 March 2024

Introduction
The main source of data used is the Wales National Workforce Reporting System (WNWRS) which has been supplied and validated by NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership.
Main points
In Wales, on 31 March 2024
- 374 active GP practices, a decrease of 9 (2.4%) since 31 March 2023.
- 1,541 full-time equivalent (FTE) fully qualified GPs, a decrease of 43 (2.7%) since 31 March 2023. This includes partners, providers, salaried, retainers and active locums only.
- 429 FTE GP registrars (trainee GPs), an increase of 11 (2.6%) since 31 March 2023.
- 5,951 FTE wider practice staff, an increase of 40 (0.7%) since 31 March 2023.
When broken down by specific GP types and staff groups
- 1,390 FTE GP practitioners, a decrease of 53 (3.7%) since 31 March 2023. This includes partners, providers and salaried GPs only.
- 11 FTE GP retainers, a decrease of 1 since 31 March 2023.
- 140 FTE GP locums, an increase of 11 (8.9%) since 31 March 2023. All locums who were active in the quarter are now counted, including locum work in local health board managed practices that were not recorded through Locum Hub Wales. See the quality report for further information.
- 1,039 FTE registered nurses, a decrease of 3 (0.3%) since 31 March 2023.
- 955 FTE direct patient care staff (staff who are not GPs or nurses but deliver health services to patients, such as health care assistants, dispensers and pharmacists), an increase of 8 (0.9%) since 31 March 2023.
- 3,957 FTE administrative or other non-clinical practice staff, an increase of 35 (0.9%) since 31 March 2023.
