Porthkerry Country Park
Porthkerry Country Park showcases a rich mosaic of woodland habitats along the South Wales coastline.
The site is well connected with access to the National Cycle Network and Wales Coastal path and welcomes large visitor numbers each year.
Enhancing biodiversity and bolstering its woodland ecosystem are central objectives at Porthkerry and it is home to rare species such as the wasp spider and the purple gromwell plant. Notably, the park is a vital stronghold for the True Service Tree, with an estimated 90% of the UK's population of these rare trees found here. Mitigating climate change impacts, such as soil erosion and the threat of non-native species, is crucial for preserving these unique species.
Porthkerry Country Park offers a dynamic and multi-purpose woodland environment, providing ample opportunities for recreation, environmental education, and volunteering. The Porthkerry Wildlife Group plays a pivotal role in surveying habitats and maintaining records of ongoing projects, allowing for the identification of trends, and informing future management practices.
Director of Place, Marcus Goldsworthy added:
"Porthkerry Country Park is a great example of how we can balance conservation with community engagement. By preserving its unique biodiversity and enhancing the park's facilities, we are creating a sustainable environment that benefits both nature and people. Our partnerships with various organisations demonstrate the positive impact of collaborative efforts in achieving our environmental goals."
Collaboration is key to the park's success. Partnerships with organizations such as the NHS, Lloyds Bank, Cardiff Rivers Group, and Bowel Cancer UK enhance both user and environmental benefits. These groups contribute valuable assistance in various habitat conservation tasks, including coppicing, tree planting, stream clearance, and meadow management.
The Ranger team at Porthkerry has also partnered with The Innovate Trust for over eight years. This collaboration supports disabled people and people with mental health conditions, offering them opportunities to engage in conservation tasks and acquire environmental skills through various activities and training programs.
Porthkerry Country Park is an excellent example of combined community collaboration and dedicated conservation efforts, creating a vibrant woodland habitat that continues to thrive for future generations.
