The IEPAW is pleased to announce that two new Deputy Interim Assessors have joined the team as of the 1st of May 2024.
The deputies will be responsible for the operation of Wales interim environmental governance arrangements. They will support the Interim Assessor in reviewing submissions received from the public and prioritising them according to seriousness and urgency. They will also produce assessments considering the functioning of the law in relation to serious environmental issues that arise.
The role of these interim measures is to provide effective oversight of the implementation of environmental law in Wales following the UK’s exit from the European Union while new statutory arrangements are put in place.
Lynda Warren has been working in the field of environment law and policy for over 30 years and will be joining IEPAW as one of the Deputy Interim Assessors. She has been a member of several UK government committees including the Countryside Council for Wales, Natural Resources Wales, and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee for which she was Deputy Chair. She has postgraduate qualifications in biology and law and has worked in academia for over 40 years, most recently as Professor of Environmental Law at Aberystwyth University. She is an Honorary Professor at Bangor University where she regularly teaches coastal zone law. She was awarded an OBE in 2017 for services for the protection of the environment in the UK and overseas and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
Anna Heslop is an experienced public and environmental law litigator who will be joining IEPAW as one of the Deputy Interim Assessors. She has worked at the European Commission, advising public bodies in the UK on the implementation of environmental and planning law and has worked for a number of environmental NGOs. This includes time at ClientEarth, where she led an international team specialising in legal action relating to the natural environment at national, European and international levels and where she was active in bringing groundbreaking litigation on air quality. Brought up in Ynys Môn, Anna is now based in Brussels, Belgium.
