Registered woodland planners: guide

Registered Woodland Planners (RWPs) are experienced foresters and land managers. They have applied to be part of the Register. They provide professional advice on planting and managing woodlands. 

RWPs work with applicants to plan, prepare and submit a woodland plan on their behalf. If you want to carry out woodland activities on your land and apply for a Welsh Government woodland grant, you will need to use a RWP. Funding is available to cover the cost of preparing a plan.

To qualify to be on the Register, RWPs need to:

• either be a member of a Chartered Institution such as: 
  • Institute of Chartered Foresters
  • Chartered Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Managers 
  • Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors
• or provide evidence of writing UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) woodland plans in the last 5 years
• agree to the RWP Terms & Conditions
• have evidence of current Professional Indemnity Insurance up to £500,000.

The information on the RWP’s list includes:

• the regions they cover
• their contact details
• a brief biography of the work they do 

to enable you to contact an appropriate RWP for your requirements. 

Once you have: 

• chosen an RWP, and 
• decided to apply for a relevant woodland grant 

you will need to select the RWPs business as part of your application through RPW (Rural Payments Wales) Online. See RPW Online: how to register.
