Young people not in education, employment or training (NEET): 2018

Main points

16 to 18 year olds

• Statistical first release basis: as at end 2017(p), 9.5% of 16 to 18 year olds were NEET (9,800) compared with 10.5% (11,200) at end 2016.
• Annual Population Survey (APS) basis: (new data) for the year ending Quarter 4 2018, 8.3% of 16 to 18 year olds were estimated to be NEET, compared with 8.0% for the year ending Quarter 4 2017.
• Pupil Destinations basis: as at October 2017, 1.6% of Year 11 leavers were NEET compared with 2.0% in 2016.

19-24 year olds

• Statistical First Release basis: as at end 2017(p), 16.2% of 19 to 24 year olds were NEET (40,100) compared with 18.5% (46,000) at end 2016.
• Annual Population Survey (APS) basis: (new data) for the year ending Quarter 4 2018, 16.0% of 19 to 24 year olds were estimated to be NEET, compared with 13.7% for the year ending Quarter 4 2017.
