What we do

The Commission for Welsh-speaking Communities was set up by the Welsh Government to make recommendations aimed at strengthening Welsh-speaking communities.

Setting up a Commission was one of the recommendations of the report Second Homes: Developing new policies in Wales (2021).

On 8 August 2024, the Chair of the Commission, Dr Simon Brooks, presented the Commission’s report, Empowering Communities, strengthening the Welsh Language, to the First Minister. The Welsh Government will respond to the report and its recommendations in 2025.

In August 2024, the First Minister launched the second phase of the Commission’s work, which will look at the future of the Welsh language as a community language in other parts of Wales and beyond.
