Main points
In total, 4,105 students in further education (FE) applied for a Welsh Government Learning Grant (WGLG) in 2021/22, a decrease of 9% on 2020/21. Of these 3,310 applications were successful, a decrease of 11% on 2020/21. This resulted in £3.6 million being paid out in WGLGs to FE students in 2021/22, compared to the £4.2 million that was paid out in 2020/21. 3,120 (94%) of successful applications were from full-time students and 170 (5%) of successful applications were from part-time students.
The proportion of successful applications from full-time students remains high at around 97%, with the corresponding figure for part-time students at 72%. 2,335 (75%) of successful full-time applications and 125 (74%) of successful part-time applications were from students with a residual income of £6,120 or less, and were therefore awarded the full grant amounts. 1,225 (40%) of successful full-time applications and 25 (16%) of successful part-time applications were from students aged 21 or under.
