Estimates of economic activity within the countries of the UK and the nine English regions for October to December 2021.
This is not the latest release in the series: Regional gross domestic product
The most recent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data in this report is for quarter 4 (October to December) 2021.
GDP measures the value of goods and services produced in the UK. It estimates the size of and growth in the economy.
These are experimental statistics and should be treated with caution. The data can be volatile, and quarterly movements should normally be considered alongside the long-term trend.
Change over the shorter term
- GDP in Wales increased by 1.6% in October to December 2021 compared with the previous quarter (July to September 2021). This compares to an increase of 0.7% in quarter 3 2021.
- Wales, Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland all saw increases over the same time period (up 1.6%, 1.6%, 1.4% and 1.0% respectively).
- For the UK as a whole, GDP increased by 1.3%.
Change over the longer term
- GDP in Wales increased by 8.2% in October to December 2021 compared with the same quarter the previous year. The UK as a whole saw GDP increase by 6.6% over the same time period.
- All four countries in the UK showed positive growth in GDP over the longer term, with the largest increase in Wales (8.2%).
Note
This is the first release to publish revised quarterly country and regional GDP data time series back to Quarter 1 2012 since the release for Quarter 3 (July to September) 2020. New methodology constraining quarterly GDP at current prices and by industry for all periods has been implemented for this release. The data are constrained to regional accounts when available, but to national accounts for more recent quarters. Revisions will be published to UK GDP by ONS in September 2022, which regional GDP will then be realigned to. As a result of these imminent changes, regional GDP data for 2021 quarter 4 (October to December) only provides GDP estimates by region and not industry. Industry breakdown of quarterly regional GDP will resume in the next release in November.
