Electoral roll statistics
On 5 April, the Welsh Government published a statistical headline about electoral roll statistics for Wales for 2021. Detailed data has been published on StatsWales.
Electoral statistics are annual counts of the number of people who are registered on electoral registers, and so entitled to vote. Electoral roll statistics (ONS) for UK Parliamentary and local government elections for the UK are available on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website.
The ONS has noted that these statistics do not reflect the changes to eligibility criteria for Senedd and local government elections in Wales since 2020. Consequently, local government electoral registrations for 16 year olds and 15 year old attainers, in Wales, are missing from these statistics. See the ONS website for more information.
Main points
- The total number of Senedd Cymru and local government electors registered to vote as at December 2021 in Wales was 2,348,600.
- This was an increase of 0.3% between 1 December 2020 and 1 December 2021, although a decrease of 0.4% from the peak on 2 March 2020.
- The total number of UK Parliamentary electors registered to vote as at 1 December 2021 in Wales was 2,307,900.
- This was an increase of 0.1% between 1 December 2020 and 1 December 2021, although a decrease of 0.6% from the peak on 2 March 2020.
- The total number of UK Parliamentary electors registered to vote in the UK as a whole fell by 0.7% between 1 December 2020 and 1 December 2021.
Census
2021 Census
On 1 March, the ONS published an updated analysis plan by topic which was created alongside part one of the response to the consultation (ONS) published in December and part two (ONS) which came out on 31 March. The final and updated analysis plans will be published in late spring, with first results scheduled for early summer.
The ONS published preliminary 2021 Census counts of country of birth by local authority for Ukraine and neighbouring or relevant countries to help local and national emergency response planning. The data is available for local authorities in Wales and England.

1921 Census
On 12 April, the ONS released newly digitalised county and district level statistics on the 1921 Census.
ONS population statistics updates
On 25 February, the ONS published an overview of the UK population in 2020. The overview provides a summary of the UK population in 2020, highlighting the changes and the factors that contribute to this. It focuses on the components of population change over time, including fertility, mortality and migration.
On 2 March, the ONS published a guide for population statistics and sources. This guide provides a summary of the planned publication dates for population estimates, their different uses and the data sources which underpin them. The ONS will continue to keep this page updated as plans progress.
Migration statistics
On 1 March, the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) published a review of international migration statistics produced by the ONS. The ONS has been transforming its statistics by using modelled estimates and administrative data instead of the International Passenger Survey (IPS).
On 26 May, the ONS published provisional long term international migration statistics for the year ending June 2021. A blog (ONS) was published alongside this discussing the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on international migration.
Home Office immigration statistics were also published on 26 May, covering the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Home Office), immigration statistics (Home Office) and the EU Settlement Scheme (Home Office).
