Why we did it
We want to reduce Wales’ carbon footprint to protect people and wildlife from the climate emergency.
So we need to reduce car journeys and increase the number of people walking, cycling and using public transport.
The roads review was undertaken to:
- ensure road investment helps the delivery of the Wales Transport Strategy, our Programme for Government commitments and Net Zero Wales
- develop criteria to identify when we should fund new road building
- use the criteria to decide if current road projects should be supported, modified, or have support withdrawn
- provide guidance on reallocating road space on parts of the road network which might in future benefit from enhancement
- consider how any savings might be allocated, to ensure problems on the road network are addressed, and make recommendations on how to tackle the backlog of road maintenance
About the review process
In June 2021, we announced a review of new road schemes that we fund. A Roads Review panel made up of independent experts was created. We received their final report, the future of road investment in Wales.
The review set out:
- tests on when to invest in roads consistent with the Wales Transport Strategy, Net Zero Wales and the Programme for Government
- the panel’s assessment of road schemes reviewed, with recommendations
We have now published our response to the roads review.
