Data on medical, dental, nursing and midwifery staff, as at 31 March 2020.
This is not the latest release in the series: Staff directly employed by the NHS
This is the second quarterly publication of NHS staffing data to provide more timely data. Data in this update covers the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, given the timing, any impact on staffing numbers in response to COVID-19 would not likely be great during this reporting period.
Between 31 March 2019 and 31 March 2020 (in terms of full-time equivalent numbers)
- The total number of directly employed NHS staff increased by 2,334 (2.9%) to 82,404.
- Medical and dental staff increased by 294 (4.5%) to 6,802.
- Nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff increased by 476 (1.4%) to 33,639.
- Other staff groups increased by 1,564 (3.9%) to 41,964.
Notes
Data has been published on StatsWales. There is no statistical report.
This data has some seasonal patterns. Medical and dental and nursing staff numbers tend to decline in the period up until August and then increase from September as graduates start. As such, comparisons are made with the same quarter from the previous year.
A number of data quality issues have been identified with the data. This mostly affects some of the more detailed staff breakdowns. Full details are provided in the latest annual statistical report.
