Estimates of economic activity within the countries of the UK and the nine English regions for July to September 2019.

The most recent data in this report is for 2019 Q3. The report does not cover the period of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

These are experimental statistics and the volatility of the quarterly data make interpreting short term changes difficult.

Change over the shorter term

  • GDP in Wales increased by 0.9% in quarter 3 (July to September) 2019 compared with the previous quarter (April to June 2019). For the UK as a whole there was an increase of 0.5%.
  • Wales had the joint fourth largest increase in output of the twelve UK countries and regions in quarter 3 2019.
  • The construction and services sectors saw an increase of 2.6% and 1.5%, respectively. However, the production sector saw a decrease of 1.3%.

Change over the longer term

  • Wales saw GDP growth of 1.7% compared to the same quarter a year ago, the UK as a whole saw GDP growth of 1.2%.
  • There was growth in the services sector (2.8%), a fall of 0.6% in the construction sector and a fall of 1.4% in the production sector.
