Plans for a brand new Llandudno based distillery and visitor centre for Penderyn Distillery are a step closer following an offer of funding support from the Welsh Government.
The proposed development will be the Welsh Whisky Company’s first expansion from its site in Penderyn, Aberdare and subject to planning permission, the £5 million project will see the new development opening in Llandudno by 2021.
Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas, said:
“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to offer support for this exciting development for one of Wales’ iconic brand names. It’s our priority to develop innovative, all-weather attractions for Wales – this development will be an added attraction for Llandudno and north Wales. The new Visitor centre and Distillery will also shine a light on Wales’ fantastic produce and will add to the cluster of excellent north Wales producers.”
Stephen Davies, Chief Executive of Penderyn Distillery, said:
“The confirmation of Welsh Government support is a major step towards achieving our plans for a brand new distillery and visitor centre in Llandudno. We believe the distillery will allow us to introduce unique and innovative single malt whiskies, distilled in north Wales, as well as providing an attraction that will complement the already vibrant and diverse tourism scene in north Wales, and contribute towards extending the visitor season further. With our funding package now in place, we will be developing our proposals further over the coming months and engaging with stakeholders and the local community as we prepare our planning application.”
Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said:
“We congratulate Penderyn on their funding bid success. We’ve been working with them as part of our Economic Growth Strategy, which aims to bring more all-year, all-weather attractions to the county. We’re very excited by Penderyn’s proposals for Llandudno, with new jobs, a new attraction for visitors and an exciting future ahead for the Old Board School on Lloyd Street.”
Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths, said:
“Penderyn is a great example of how the Welsh food and drinks sector is thriving and gaining a global reputation. I’m pleased that we have been able to support Penderyn to develop their business enabling people across Wales and the UK to find out more and sample this award winning product.”
The development has been offered £1.4 million from the Tourism Investment Support Scheme and Food Business Investment Scheme.
