The University of South Wales (USW) has joined forces with the Welsh Revenue Authority (WRA) to provide an innovative new degree apprenticeship.
The course will provide students with the opportunity to gain a university degree while gaining hands-on experience without incurring a student debt.
The first cohort of students will start the BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions apprenticeship this September, while also working for the WRA, an award-winning cloud native organisation.
The course is fully funded by Welsh Government (subject to HEFCW sign off in June). This will allow those starting their careers, or who are considering changing sectors, the chance to earn a professional qualification.
The four-and-a-half-year course will be delivered through a unique combination of online learning and face-to-face teaching at USW’s Pontypridd campus. It starts with an intensive eight-week bootcamp, where apprentices will develop vital core skills.
Applicants will be assessed at the WRA’s base in Nantgarw, and successful candidates will not only have a full-time role with a competitive salary and a sponsored degree, but also opportunities to develop their careers. There is guaranteed progression through the salary band while completing the degree.
Francis Cowe, Director of FE Partnerships and Degree Apprenticeship at USW, said:
This is a great opportunity for those looking to get into this specialist technology area.
This partnership with the WRA will help to meet the increasing demand for graduates who have the skills to work in these specialisms.
With the support of Welsh Government and WRA, we are further building USW’s reputation for building up the nation’s digital skills, this builds on our existing portfolio of education in data science and cyber security.
Anthony Pritchard, Head of Digital and Technology at the WRA, said:
We are a specialised organisation and having apprentices has always been part of our plan for increasing skills and providing interesting career opportunities in Wales.
Digital and technology skills are a core part of our strategy. We want to hear from individuals who are passionate about digital and would thrive working in a dynamic and creative environment.
Closing date for applications is 2 June 2019.
