The report looks at what factors contribute to whether an individual has a strong sense of community for April 2013 to March 2014.

People were more likely to have a strong sense of community if they:

  • were from a rural area
  • were older
  • had high overall life satisfaction
  • spoke Welsh
  • were owner-occupiers
  • did not have a disability or limiting longstanding illness.

Which local authority people lived in also made a difference; for example, people living in Pembrokeshire were more likely to have a strong sense of community than those in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

We did not find a link between the following and sense of community:

  • marital status
  • economic status
  • qualification levels
  • having children in the household
  • having household internet.
