A new 100 place school for pupils with additional learning needs (ALN) has been officially opened by the Minister for Lifelong Learning and Welsh Language, Alun Davies.
This was published under the 2016 to 2021 administration of the Welsh Government
Situated in Penrhyndeudraeth, Ysgol Hafod Lon provides a 21st Century learning environment for pupils with a wide range of additional needs in the Dwyfor Meirionydd area of Gwynedd.
The new school houses ultra-modern facilities including:
- hydrotherapy pool
- sensory rooms
- rebound therapy room
- multi sensory external environment
- all weather play area
A 6 bed residential unit has also been included, providing vital respite opportunities for pupils and parents.
Funding has been allocated as part of the 21st Century Schools and Education Programme, a unique collaboration between the Welsh Government, the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) and local authorities with the aim of creating a generation of 21st century schools in Wales.
Gwynedd County Council were awarded £6.5million against a total project cost of £13m.
Speaking at the school, Alun Davies said:
“It is a privilege to see first hand the fantastic setting which has been created here, and the difference it is making to both pupils and staff. I’m sure this inspiring environment together with the huge commitment shown by staff here will give pupils every opportunity to reach their potential.
“I am proud that this school has been delivered by virtue of our 21st Century Schools and Education Programme - a programme which represents the largest investment in our schools and colleges since the 1960s, and which will see £1.4 billion being invested over the first five years.
“It is only right that I take this opportunity to acknowledge, congratulate and thank all who have been involved in creating this wonderful new school. The project managers, the design and construction team, Gwynedd County Council, Wynne Construction, and everyone at the school itself.”
