Halen Môn – Anglesey Sea Salt
Nominated for Enterprise award
Halen Môn is a small company, which was started on the banks of the Menai Strait on Anglesey by Alison and David Lea-Wilson. The company, which employs over 20 staff, exports their product globally to 16 countries.
In 1997, Alison and David struck culinary gold when they left a saucepan of seawater from the Menai Strait to boil on the Aga in their family kitchen. After research around the world and at Bangor University in 1998, they began by supplying Halen Môn Sea Salt to their local butcher on the Isle of Anglesey.
Today their sea salt is enjoyed around the world by chefs, food lovers and even a former US President! It has been served at the London 2012 Olympics, political summits and a royal wedding and is a vital named ingredient in a handful of other products, familiar on supermarket shelves.
Alison and David resurrected traditional sea salt harvesting by combining traditional techniques with brand new technology to produce the flaky sea salt. Halen Môn is the 1st EU Protected Designation of Origin product in Wales having achieved Protected Food Name status alongside Welsh Lamb and Beef and other Welsh products.
They have succeeded in starting a sustainable, successful business which employs local people with environmental and educational principles whilst also attracting tourists to a rural, coastal area in Wales. The profile of the area and the island itself have been raised significantly around the globe as a result.
