Process evaluation of Cymraeg for Kids: emerging findings

Its objectives are to support parents, prospective parents and other family members in using Welsh at home, transmit Welsh to their children, and to support children’s linguistic development in a social and educational context.

This report provides an overview of the emerging findings on the implementation of the programme.

These findings, based on fieldwork undertaken in the period April to June 2018, are presented under six themes:

• programme aims and objectives
• target audience
• programme activities
• geographic areas
• structures and processes
• strategic planning. 

The programme’s target audience is broad, and includes all families, regardless of linguistic background and intentions in relation to language transmission and use. According to the evidence gathered to date, the audience reached varies from area to area, and can vary from week to week as new families join and leave.

Feedback from parents on the activities offered has been very positive with regards to locations, timings and the nature of the activities. The report provides some indication of the way in which the programme is developing its collaborative work with a range of partners. There was a perception amongst programme staff that there are some challenges and barriers that limited partnership working in some areas – namely the time available to staff, and the capacity and also the willingness of partner organisations to work in partnership.
