Main points
- In 2016/17 there were 0.4 permanent exclusions, 34.4 fixed-term exclusions of 5 days or fewer and 1.9 fixed-term exclusions over 5 days per 1,000 pupils in maintained schools and pupil referral units.
- The rate of permanent exclusions has increased for the first time since 2011/12. The rates of fixed-term exclusions increased in 2016/17.
