Student Health and Well-being Survey

The survey is carried out by the School Health Research Network (SHRN). SHRN is a partnership led by the Centre for Development, Evaluation, Complexity and Implementation in Public Health Improvement (DECIPHer) at Cardiff University, with Welsh Government; Public Health Wales; Cancer Research UK; and the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD).

Students in maintained, mainstream secondary schools in Wales complete the bilingual, electronic Student Health and Well-being Survey every two years. The survey is combined with a School Environment Questionnaire, which all schools complete on their health policies and practices.

The survey is based on the World Health Organization’s cross-national Health Behaviour of School-aged Children (HBSC) survey, in which Wales has taken part since 1985.
