PC Owen Davies and PC Rhiannon Hurst
Nominated for Bravery award
PC Owen Davies and PC Rhiannon Hurst of Gwent Police were called to a house fire in Newport in the early hours of 9 January 2014.
Arriving at the house, they were given details of the occupants including a disabled child trapped in the attic. As the fire service was yet to arrive, and without thought to their own safety, the 2 officers entered the burning building and located 7 of the occupants and brought them out to safety.
Both returned to the building to attempt to rescue the child still in the attic. Once the attic door was located PC Hurst left the scene to summon further assistance. However, PC Davies was unable to open the attic door and was forced to leave the building as burning debris was falling. The officers then briefed the Fire Service on the location of the trapped child who was eventually brought to safety.
All 8 family members were rescued without serious injuries due to the quick thinking and bravery of the 2 nominees.
