How to get the NHS COVID Pass to prove that you are vaccinated against COVID-19.

The NHS COVID Pass lets you share your coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination records in a secure way.

It allows you to prove to others that you have been vaccinated. This could be for

  • travelling abroad
  • showing your employer that you are fully vaccinated and are not required to self-isolate if you’re identified as a contact
  • attending certain events or venues

Who can get an NHS COVID Pass in Wales

You can get an NHS COVID Pass if:

  • you were vaccinated in Wales or England  
  • you are aged 16 or over  

If you were vaccinated outside the UK, you need to get proof of vaccination from the country where you were vaccinated.

However, we continue to work with the UK Government on a system and process to recognise vaccinations administered outside the UK.

How to access the NHS COVID Pass in Wales

You can access the NHS COVID Pass via the NHS website ( This will allow you to produce a COVID pass using a smart phone, a computer or laptop.

To access the service, you’ll need to register for an NHS login. You will need to upload a photo of your ID (passport, full UK driving licence, full European driving licence). 

If you live in Wales, you cannot get it via the NHS app as this is only valid in England.

If you do not have photographic ID you will need to request a paper NHS COVID certificate.

Your NHS COVID Pass includes a barcode. The expiry date refers to the barcode and will update automatically. It does not apply to your vaccination status.


Children under 16 are not being vaccinated at the moment. If you’re travelling abroad you may need to show proof of a COVID-19 test.

If you are registered with a GP in England

If you live in Wales but are registered with a GP in England you may need to access the NHS App system for England. We may not have access to your vaccination record.

Using the NHS COVID Pass for international travel

The NHS COVID Pass allows you to show others, when travelling abroad, that you’ve had a COVID-19 vaccine.

In addition to your NHS COVID Pass, you will need to follow other rules when travelling, such as pre-departure testing. Check entry requirements such as COVID-19 tests and isolation for countries that you intend to visit (on GOV.UK).

You should check that the name on your passport matches what it is on the NHS COVID Pass. You need to do this at least 2 weeks before you travel. If the names are different, contact your GP practice to have your details updated. Make sure you familiarise yourself with the rules for foreign travel to and from Wales.

In some countries you do not need to show your NHS COVID Pass. You may need to either quarantine or provide tests to meet country entry requirements.

If you download and print a copy of the NHS COVID Pass, the expiry date will not update and you will need to print a new copy when it has expired.

If you have not been fully vaccinated

If you haven’t completed your vaccine course, please follow existing entry requirements. Most countries will accept testing or quarantine as alternatives to a vaccination certificate.

You need to carefully research the requirements of your destination country before travelling.

Getting help using the NHS COVID Pass

If your vaccination status record is incorrect, please contact your local health board.

If your personal details are wrong you will need to contact your GP.  Your COVID Pass will only show your first forename and surname.

Request a paper NHS COVID-19 certificate

You should only request a paper COVID Pass if:

  • you have had a full course of the COVID-19 vaccine (you should wait 5 days after your final dose before requesting it)
  • you are aged 16 or over
  • you wish to receive a bilingual copy of the pass
  • you do not have photographic ID

Call 0300 303 5667 to request a COVID Pass if you are unable to use the digital NHS COVID Pass or would like a bilingual certificate.

It can take up to 10 working days for a certificate to arrive. No requests can be fast tracked and certificates cannot be collected.

You can call 7 days a week between 9am and 5pm.

Calls are typically charged between 2p and 40p per minute and are included in free call packages.

GPs cannot provide letters showing your COVID-19 status.

Protecting your data

Your COVID-19 post vaccination status letter has been produced and printed with a range of embedded security features to help prevent fraud. It includes a barcode which provides a unique reference that can be used to verify your individual COVID vaccination record. Vaccination statement status service privacy notice
