Swansea area benefiting from Superfast Cymru

This press release was published under the 2011 - 2016 Welsh government

Work is on-going across the Swansea local authority area to bring superfast broadband to more premises every day, Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology Julie James has said.
Friday 02 October 2015

The Deputy Minister was visiting the city in the week that she announced that half a million premises in Wales are now able to access superfast broadband thanks to Superfast Cymru.

Swansea itself had already benefited from previous private sector rollout but Superfast Cymru brings faster internet speeds to areas which were not covered by this.

In the Swansea local authority area to date more than 17,700 premises have access to superfast broadband thanks to Superfast Cymru.
Superfast Cymru is the partnership between the Welsh Government, BT, UK Government and European Regional Development fund which brings faster broadband to areas which would not otherwise receive it.

Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology Julie James said:

“Work is going on across Wales to bring faster broadband to premises.

"In Swansea over 17,000 have access to it because of Superfast Cymru.  That’s 17,000 premises which would otherwise not receive it without the intervention of Superfast Cymru.

“The way we do business today and the way we live our lives means fast and reliable internet connections are vital.  That’s why the Welsh Government has invested in Superfast Cymru, ensuring Wales is one of the most connected countries in Europe.

“The work is far from over.  It is a challenging programme and BT engineers are continuing to work day in day out to bring superfast broadband to communities across Wales.”

Funding has been provided by the Welsh Government, the UK Government and the European Regional Development Fund, with BT contributing a further funding to deliver fibre across Wales through its commercial rollout.

Households and businesses which want to take advantage of the benefits of fast fibre broadband should contact an internet service provider (ISP) of their choice and place an order.
