Wylfa Newydd offers real opportunity for North Wales, says First Minister

This press release was published under the 2011 - 2016 Welsh government

The construction and operation of the proposed Wylfa Newydd development on Anglesey offers a real opportunity for North Wales, First Minister Carwyn Jones said today on a visit to the site.
Thursday 18 June 2015

Wylfa Newydd is proposed on a site next to the existing Wylfa power station.  It is expected that some 8,500 people would be employed at the site at the peak of the construction period.  The operational workforce will number around 850 for the 60+ years of the power station’s life.

A recent independent report into the multi-billion pound investment planned by the nuclear industry in Wales over the next twenty years highlighted the opportunities which were on offer for Welsh businesses.

The First Minister said:

“The planned decommissioning of the existing Wylfa power station and the plans for Wylfa Newydd offer a real opportunity for Welsh businesses and young people in the area.

“Anglesey and North Wales as a whole are well placed because the infrastructure is in place to support the existing station along with a highly skilled workforce.  By investing in specialised facilities to train our young people now, such as the renowned Energy Centre at Coleg Llandrillo Menai in Llangefni, we want to ensure that local young people are able to take advantage of the significant opportunities when they come.

“As the recent independent report into the nuclear industry highlighted the proposals for Wylfa Newydd will be a once in a generation opportunity for Welsh businesses, and a range of support is available through the Welsh Government to help them take advantage of this.

“Wylfa Newydd is a huge project which has the potential to make a real difference in the area, supporting businesses, allowing young people to have a skilled career  in the area and creating long term employment.”

Greg Evans, Operations Director at Horizon said:

“The First Minister’s visit builds on the strong and consistent support we have received from the Welsh Government for this crucial project. Building and operating Wylfa Newydd is a long-term investment in North Wales and we share in the goal of maximising the opportunities for the local workforce, companies, and young people. We will continue to work closely with all partners to deliver the benefits the project will bring for the region and Wales more widely.”
