North Wales positive employment figures welcomed

North Wales has a higher employment rate and lower unemployment and economic inactivity rates than Wales as a whole, according to the latest quarterly Regional Economic and Labour market profile.
Monday 30 April 2018

The profile, which compiles published figures on a regional level,  shows that over the year the employment rate in North Wales rose by 2.3 percentage points, while the ILO unemployment rate decreased by 0.6 percentage points.  North Wales has seen a bigger improvement in the employment and unemployment rates compared to Wales as a whole since 2001.

Welcoming the figures Economy Secretary Ken Skates said:

“These figures show a positive picture for North Wales, demonstrating that employment has risen since 2001 and the region benefitted from the largest increase in Wales over the past year.  This shows the region is in a strong position as we face the challenges ahead.

“Of course there is more to do.  The Economic Action Plan we published in December sets out a whole government approach to building stronger foundations for our economy, supercharging the industries of the future, and empowering Wales’ regions including North Wales.

“There are exciting developments for the region including the Advanced Manufacturing Research Institute in Deeside and Menai Science Park at Gaerwen.  The Wylfa Newydd development also offers tremendous opportunities and we are working hard to ensure the region is able to take full advantage of that.

“We are also currently working with regional partners and the UK government to pursue the North Wales Growth Bid which will be focussed on increasing economic growth across the region.

“These figures are positive for North Wales, and we will continue to build on that to further strengthen the region’s economy.”
