Plans submitted for new head office and e-commerce facility for Charlies Stores in Welshpool

This press release was published under the 2011 - 2016 Welsh government

Charlies Stores - one of the largest independent retailers in Wales - is working with the Welsh Government on plans to establish its headquarters and an e-commerce fulfilment centre in Welshpool following significant growth in on-line trading.
Tuesday 22 December 2015

The family run business, founded nearly 30 years ago by MD Chris Lloyd with two small Army surplus stores in Mid-Wales, has grown extensively. It has broadened its product range, moved into large format retailing and has seven established stores with plans for an additional two stores in the pipeline.
Its website business has seen 80% year on year growth with plans to double on-line turnover in 2016 with the ambition of internet sales driving its future growth.
To facilitate this growth the company needs to establish a head office facility in Welshpool alongside an e-commerce centre to consolidate its operations. It currently operates across multiple sites in Newtown and Welshpool, many of which are reaching full capacity.

The expansion will safeguard the 67 jobs currently in the Head Office and Warehouse functions of Charlies Stores, whilst providing opportunities for growth and job creation in the future.

Chris Lloyd, Managing Director, said

“We are lucky enough to be based in the heart of mid-Wales, and have a fantastic team who have all contributed to and driven the growth of Charlies Stores. We want to expand the business whilst remaining in the area and protecting the jobs and employees we have. This exciting opportunity allows us to do this, whilst also creating new opportunities and jobs for local people..”

The Welsh Government is supporting Charlies expansion plans by submitting a planning application for a 108,000 sq ft head office and e-commerce facility on land it owns on Offa’s Dyke Business Park
Charlies Stores currently employs 194 in Welshpool and Newtown and 363 in total.
The company has no plans to close existing retail operations in Newtown.
