Tuesday 01 December 2015

Calling on people throughout Wales to support their local enterprises this Saturday (7 December), the Minister said SMEs are the lifeblood of the economy and vital to the Welsh Government’s ambition of driving economic growth and creating jobs.

Mrs Hart said:

“Over 99% (almost 218,000) of businesses in Wales are SMEs, and SMEs employ 60% of the people working in the private sector. Small Business Saturday is an opportunity to recognise the role of entrepreneurs and small businesses in building a strong economy, encouraging growth and creating jobs.

“I hope as many people as possible take part in this campaign to discover the diverse range of goods and services provided by small businesses in their communities. As a pro-business government we recognise the value of supporting new start-ups and helping existing SMEs to expand. Since 2011, the Welsh Government has through its Business Wales advisor network provided advice to over 32,000 micro and SMEs and information and signposting to over 78,000 other businesses.

“Through a network of 11 hubs located across Wales and through a dedicated helpline and internet site  our Business Wales Service provides advice, information, guidance and support on a variety of topics including financial, equality, environmental, international trade and procurement advice. The Business Wales Mentoring Service also enables businesses to access mentoring support from a wide, diverse mix of experienced business people.”

To coincide with Small Business Saturday, the Welsh Government is supporting Market Place Wales events in Cardiff and Portmeirion and another in Wrexham on 10 December. The initiative, run by Business Wales, offers opportunities for Welsh SMEs and micro businesses to ‘test trade’ in street markets, providing them with valuable face-to-face selling experience and a chance to promote their products and services.

Mrs Hart added:

“The Marketplace Wales events which have been running alongside the Small Business Saturday campaign are an opportunity for new companies to find new audiences and promote their products and services, and act as a showcase for the many entrepreneurial success stories we have here in Wales.”
