GVA1 per capita in Wales is just 79% of the UK average, but there is significant intra-regional variation. In West Wales and the Valleys, GVA per capita is two thirds of the UK average while South and East Wales exhibit near parity with the rest of the UK. In North Wales, GVA per capita varies from 53% of the UK average in Anglesey to 94% in Flintshire and Wrexham. The prosperity gap between North East and North West Wales may have lessened somewhat in recent years. However, this appears to be due to a relative deterioration in N E Wales position rather than a “catching up” in the Objective One area of North West Wales.
