The Independent Advisory Group on the Future Electricity Grid for Wales met on 30 September 2024. The agenda included discussion of workstreams and possible sub-groups.

Introductory Discussion

The inevitability of major infrastructure changes and some recent publications discussing future electricity grid needs. Emphasis was put on the importance of the group focusing on the Wales-wide picture rather than specific schemes.

Welsh Government offered support to members in dealing with direct inquiries from lobby groups and third parties, confirming that all enquiries can be directed to the secretariat. Contact details have been shared and are also published on the webpages.

Workstreams and Sub-groups

A proposal was discussed to work in subgroups, to enhance evidence and data gathering processes. Five work streams were initially proposed: infrastructure options overview; infrastructure installation, lifespan and maintenance; infrastructure costing; social and business impacts; and environmental impacts.

Following discussion, the group agreed to condense these and form three sub-groups focusing on technical aspects; costing information; and environmental/social impacts. Sub-group membership proposals, frameworks, and chairs will be circulated ahead of the next meeting.

Technical data gathering

The group commenced discussion of a technical questionnaire for network companies, to gather data on infrastructure options, capabilities and costs.

Governance information for publishing

The finalised governance documents are with translation and will be on the webpages imminently.
